Getting a new puppy is an exciting family event. At the Interstate Animal Clinic, we strongly encourage parents to bring new puppies in for a Comprehensive Wellness Exam within the first 24 hours but preferably PRIOR to taking a new puppy home, particularly to a household with children. Having one of our knowledgeable experienced doctors examine new puppies prior to having all the family get attached may help avoid heartache in the event that the puppy has an underlying birth defect or abnormality. Because they explore everything with their mouth, puppies are also prone to carrying intestinal parasites, some of which can be transmitted to other pets, and even people. Stopping by our office prior to taking new puppies home may help minimize those exposures. While some puppies have received boosters by breeders, kennels, or shelter personnel, just like children, puppies require a series of vaccinations done by a licensed health care professional. That first checkup visit is a great time to have our doctors assess anything the new puppy may have been given and recommend a comprehensive vaccination program to get off on the right "paw" and stay healthy.

Coupled with an appointment - this brings the cost of an office visit down to $0! The Vitals Only Visit does not include a doctor's exam. One of our skilled staff members will get your pet's Temperature, Pulse, Respiration and Weight. This visit does not allow for prescription writing by the Doctor (other than Heartworm Preventatives), as we do have to have a Doctor's Exam recorded at least once annually to legally maintain writing prescriptions for a patient. It is ideal for pets who have recently been seen by the doctor and now only need a booster. Remember, your pet ages must faster than we do so a comprehensive wellness exam is the most important part of your pet's regular checkup.

We strongly recommend microchiping your pet as it is the best tool for getting your pet home if it is ever lost. Microchips cannot be lost like collars or tags. Using a handheld scanner, chips can be read and identified by shelter or veterinary personnel to retrieve an individualized number which can be registered and traced back to you. We do offer a discount for doing microchips while patients are under anesthesia so while it is best to get your pet chipped before you take them home, waiting till they get spayed or neutered will save a few dollars.
